INTERVIEW – MASAKI MIYAGAWA – ALSO KNOWN AS THE DJ AKAIDA – DISSIZIT.COM

1.) NAME?
AKAIDA

2.) WHERE YOU FROM?
Metro Los Angeles

3.) WHERE YOU REPPIN CURRENTLY?
A-SIDE

4.) WHO’S AN ALLY/CREW YOU REP OR ARE YOU A SOLO ARTIST?

I’m lucky to be around cats like BASS CHEF aka TIBET & Josh Jetson. Also Radiobomb  & Dank Radio crew @ 90.7FM in LA. Working with good people is a key in any activity!

5.) WHATS YOUR FIRST MEMORIES OF MUSIC?

I keeps it real son, Disco Duck. Hey that was the jam as a kid, prolly drove my parents nuts singing that over & over!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97RjuC9YeXg

I didn’t really get heavy into music until my teenage years.

6.) WHEN DID YOU FIRST HEAR HIP-HOP MUSIC?

I started to hear hip-hop in the late 80s. I became a fan in early 90s. Remember when hip-hop used to be fun? Digital Underground, Public Enemy, Ice Cube. I was more into indie rock and new wave back then. The first music that really made a lasting impression on me was hearing jungle/dnb in downtown LA, it was 1997. N20 jungle label had a loft / store there called Freeburning. I was an intern at Giant Robot Magazine that shared the loft. I was exposed to my first real underground scene at that time. Like a lot of things 90s was a golden era for art & music, I was lucky to catch the end of that era. First time I saw real DJin going down, there was a skate ramp in the back, lot of classic underground parties. I had been to some indie rock / punk shows, but the LA rave scene was the sound & movement that made a lasting impression on me.

7.) WHERE YOU AT RIGHT NOW? WHAT CURRENT AND RELEASED PROJECTS COULD YOU SHARE WITH US?

I put a summer day party together called A-SIDE @ The Airliner in LA, same spot where Low End Theory goes down every week. It was a day party, we had bboys, jungliest, Japan Reggae Crew, South Rakkas Crew (Mad Decent) headlined. Awesome vibes on some ’90s ish, peep the vids, it was goin off. We working on the next episode, stay tuned!!

http://asidela.org/ http://youtube.com/theasidela

8.) ANY SHOWS OR EVENTS YOU’LD LIKE TO SHOUT OUT?

Respect Drum n Bass night in LA running 13 years strong, I been there more this year than in the last 5 years. Lot of quality DnB in 2012, and they’ve had back to back classic shows regularly the last year or so.

9.) RAMEN OR MAC AND CHEESE?

That’s a hard one. I’d have to say Mac n Cheese, cuz most times you gettin instant ramen at home and that ain’t OG. I’m serious about my noodles son.

10.) ANY BOOKS YOU READING RIGHT NOW?

Our lives are so fast paced now, I’m gettin most of my info from internet talk radio these days. Check Gary Null for health & world issues. There’s some good channels on youtube also. Books that I can recommend? Anything by OSHO, they’re thought provoking and not too long. Good self help books.

11.) IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE RIGHT NOW WITH 5000$ where would it be and what would you be doing?

I’d be in Brazil or in Asia. I’m born & bred American, but having been abroad, I miss the overseas vibes. People seem a lot friendlier & genuine. I have a low tolerance for BS too, so living in LA don’t help haha smile

12.) WHAT IS YOUR TOP 5 FAVORITE CHARITABLE CAUSES?

If you want to help people do it locally or to organizations where you know help is getting to the right places. Lot of people these days are looking to help Africa, Haiti etc, and that’s needed, but we have a lot of people in our own communities that need help too. Try to do something positive in your community every week, a little bit goes a long way, even if its a smile or thumbs up.

13.) WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU RIGHT NOW?

Where we as a human race are going. Look around, something needs to change – big time. The time we’re living in has been talked about for thousands of years. Time to do what’s right people.

14.) ANYONE LOCKED DOWN YOU WANT TO SHOUT OUT IN THE BING?

Provoked from the Indio/Coachella Valley and AJ Jackson.

15.) DO YOU HAVE A SOUNDCLOUD FACEBOOK WEBSITE MIXCLOUD TWITTER YOUTUBE OR OTHER PROFILES ONLINE YOU’LD LIKE TO SHARE?

http://soundcloud.com/akaider

http://www.akaida.com/

16.) WHO’S IN YOUR TOP TEN RIGHT NOW?

S.P.Y. – Killin it on the DnB tip, hard & liquid tracks. the guy is total science for 2012.
My Brazil homies LEVEL 2, DJ CHAP, Crytical Dub & Andrezz, they’re gettin big support from V Recordings / Liquid V / Chronic.
Also keep an eye out for D-RAKKAS & RYOKO, new electro group comin out. If you like South Rakkas Crew you’ll dig their sound.

17.) WHAT KIND OF PREFORMER ARE YOU?

Keepin the mix tight & rockin the crowd. DJs are entertainers, whatever you do, keep the crowd movin & grooving. I practice a lot before shows, I think as a performer you have a responsibility to put on a good show.

18.) DO YOU LIKE ART?

Art is as important as food. How you dress yourself (fashion), how you walk, talk this is all culture, art. Old Confucian principle is if you can’t write a poem or perform some sort of music, you’re a barbarian. Art elevates the soul, whatever you do try to bring something artistic into your life everyday.

19.) IF SO ANY VISUAL ARTISTS OR PAINTERS OR GRAFFITI ARTISTS OR GRAPHIC DESIGNERS ETC ETC YOUR INTO RIGHT NOW?

OG SLICK DISSIZIT!  Been reppin Slick’s stuff since the Shaolin Worldwide days, late ’90s => DISSIZIT.COM!

20.) TOP 5 WEBSITES YOU LIKE?

http://bigghostnahmean.blogspot.com/

http://enenews.com/

http://zerohedge.com/

http://maxkeiser.com/

http://redicecreations.com/

21.) WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO GET DAILY NEWS FROM ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS IN OUR COUNTRY AND ABROAD?

DrudgeReport.com is good for headlines. Rense.com & Redicecreations.com if you’re on the fringe tip. Just be aware everything has some sort of agenda. Be discerning and don’t believe everything you hear.

22.) where do you see the future of  EDM heading?

We’re at the end of an era, something new will happen across the board.

23.) If you could work with any artist, who would it be?

Hard to say.  Artists are crazy people.  That’s what makes them unique.  A lot of times, I don’t want to know too much and just admire their art from afar as a fan.

24.) What country’s do you like best for your genre besides your own?

Brazil is a great place for DnB & clubbing in general, they don’t get the headliners as often as we do in LA, but the vibes are incredible. And yes the rumors are true, Brazilians girls are super hot.

25.) What’s your favorite sport?

I used to like the Lakers, but Showtime Lakers, Kareem, Magic Johnson. Was there a golden era for sports too?  I’m haven’t been so into sports the last few years.

26.) When did you first start DJ’ing?

I started to DJ in 1998, summer job, bought some technics. I did it as a hobby, I was always into more eclectic, left field stuff so it took years before I DJ’ed in a club. Its hard to play 180BPM breakbeats @ weddings or birthday parties? Unless you know really cool people wink

27.) Is there a reason or someone/something that influenced you to take the step towards becoming who you are today in the music industry?

West Coast Jungle Legend R.A.W. aka 6BLOCC. Hip-hop mixing skills with electronic music. The guy laid down the blueprint what else can you say!

28.) Top 5 events you’ve played since starting to DJ?

I played Tranquera the Dubstep/Bass party in Brazil three times, really incredible experience. Also I’ve thrown two parties in LA the last few years. I’d rather play a party where I can play obscure stuff or open format than have to stick to a top 40 format. I came up in underground scenes, so I always had a open mind for niche / underground music. As a DJ its a balance, to keep the crowd moving but to keep yourself musically happy too. I’m lucky to have been able to do that over the years.

I was born in Hawaii, my mom got me into the art ting. My dad was active in the military for 20 something years, we moved around a lot.. I moved to Montreal in 1994 and stayed there some years. I started cutting dubplates and mastering vinyl in 1998 , on a lathe I rebuilt and customized over the years. I moved the cutting studio to Brooklyn NYC in 2001…and in 2003 started touring a lot in Europe…in 2005 I moved over to Europe full time, and sold my NYC cutting room to my apprentice Tim Xavier..since the past 4 years Barcelona spain has been my homebase, with my labels, Little Island and Chopstick Dubplate, headquartered in London in the UK. TUFFIST AND ARIES OF CHOPSTICK DUBPLATE SOUND SYSTEM – LITTLE ISLAND PUBLISHING http://stokedonphotos.blogspot.com/

GREAT INTERVIEW WITH SAM XL OF PURE FILTH SOUND – WEST COAST LEGEND – LOOK OUT FOR THE BASS MOVES SPACE LP

Sam XL of Pure Filth and David Harrow formerly of On-U Sound met in November 2010 while working on project’s for the Ninja Tune 20 year anniversary party in Los Angeles. The two Brit’s soon became friends and decided to team up working together on a series of small club installations in L.A called “Screwface” (a weekly off shoot of Bassface) and on the Bass Oasis Dome for Coachella 2011.

That summer they began to produce original music and visual content, developing a “Live” Pure Filth Sound show to accompany the pounding Bass of the mighty Pure Filth speaker system.
Over the last year they have crafted a sonic epilogue from Los Angeles alongside Underground star’s Warrior Queen, Kemst, Busdriver, Jakes, Mestizo, Nocando, RYAT and Crazy D.

Recently Pure Filth Sound made some noise at BASSFACE, L.A’s infamous underground electronic warehouse party alongside Flying Lotus, Jakes, Ras G, Monopoly and Teebs.

This spring Pure Filth Sound performed two weekend’s in a row at North America’s premier music festival Coachella in the Sahara tent.
Stay posted for a free mixtape/sampler of the forth coming LP (which is posted below), but in the meantime check our soundcloud link for free downloads.

Probably around 1983. The first hip-hop I was exposed to was Nucleus “Jam on it” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcleus (here’s the youtube video for the song ‘Jam on it’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaNzrXAUHBk). That was my first 12″ but we didn’t call it “Hip-Hop” back then, it was Electro. Afrika Bambataa and the Soul Sonic Force http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrika_Bambaataa, Egyptian Lover http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_Lover etc, all that was all considered electro http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro_(music).

There used to be these dope Electro compilations out of London called “Crucial Electro” there was a whole series of them. I’d save up all my pocket money and buy them.

21.) WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO GET DAILY NEWS FROM ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS IN OUR COUNTRY AND ABROAD

http://truth-out.org/

22.) Where do you see the future of electronic music heading?

Up – Up – and – Away!

23.) If you could work with any artist, who would it be?

I just worked with Kemst, Busdriver, jakes, Crazy D, RYAT, Nocando and Mestizo…pretty stoked on that;-)

24.) What country’s do you like best for your genre besides your own?

All of Europe really

25.) What’s your favorite sport?
Horseshoes

26.) When did you first start DJ’ing?

Started Djing in 89

27.) Is there a reason or someone/something that influenced you to take the step towards becoming who you are today in the music industry?

I have made underground music my life now for over 30+ years. From Punk rock in the late 70’s to Hip-Hop in the early/mid 80’s, to house and techno through the end of the 80’s into the 90’s into Jungle in the mid 90’s through 2006 into dub step and the beat scene up til present day. I’ve tried to keep progressing and feel blessed to have worked alongside and met some of the real pioneers from Afrika Bambataa & Hank Shocklee, to Juan Atkins and King Britt, to Grooverider, Goldie and Andy C, to Kutmah, Ras G and Flying Lotus and Hatcha, Mala, Skream, Benga and N-Type etc and now doing sound and working with people like Amon Tobin, David Rodigan, DJ Krush, Mixmaster Mike all the Trap crews blowing up in L.A right now.

28.) Top 5 events you’ve played since starting to DJ?

The Top events differ for me because sometimes I do sound and sometimes I DJ or I’m performing or both. Here’s some of my favorite events!
1.) Doing my first party in 92 and having a 1,000 peeps show up really opened my eyes to the power of good music

2.) Starting my Sunday weekly Samurai and having all the D & B greats come through and play for free!

3.) In 2007 Starting and playing Pure Filth, the 1st Dubstep weekly in the U.S at a real Speakeasy in Down Town LA & helping to lay down the foundation for the American Dubstep scene

4.) Doing my 1st area at Coachella 2009 and about 15,000 people mobbing our stage for Flying Lotus

5.) Doing Sound for Amon Tobins sold out ISAM tour last year was incredible and blew my mind!

Some quote’s from Sam XL… CEO of Pure Filth Sound and of the Pure Filth Record Label:

“It’s a blessing and I just keep trying to push the envelope on how people experience sound. Getting to write an album with an Underground legend like David Harrow is the cherry on the cake really. I try to follow my heart and my gut and not my wallet which can be difficult at times, especially when I see Dj’s/crews/promoters selling us out to the highest corporate bidder.”

“Maybe i’m a little hardcore but I got the words of Malcolm X ingrained into my head at an early ‘No Compromise…No Sell-out’. You can thank Keith LeBlanc for that!”

“I refuse to sell out and do cheesy shit…bury me in a Pure Filth Bassbin!”

Lewiston Maine

4.) WHO’S AN ALLY/CREW YOU REP OR ARE YOU A SOLO ARTIST?

Digital Mercenaries and Heavy Pressure Recordings.

5.) WHATS YOUR FIRST MEMORIES OF MUSIC?

My Mom always had music playing throughout the house. She was pretty eclectic. Everything from Allman Bros, Zeppelin, Pat Metheny, The Police, Depeche mode. Some of it I didn’t fully appreciate until I was older.

John Dewitt with his late Uncle Steve. Music has been in his blood for his whole life.

6.) WHEN DID YOU FIRST HEAR ELECTRONIC MUSIC?

It was probably watching Nova when I was really small. Didn’t take my breath away and change my life or anything. That happened when I was a teenager and heard Skinny Puppy for the first time haha.

7.) WHERE YOU AT RIGHT NOW? WHAT CURRENT AND RELEASED PROJECTS COULD YOU SHARE WITH US?

Pretty happy just pacing myself slowly. Playing shows all over NE, making new friends. That sorta thing.

8.) ANY SHOWS OR EVENTS YOU’LD LIKE TO SHOUT OUT?

Most definitely. Friction Fridays at Flask Lounge in Portland Maine. Digital Mercenaries have this fun little monthly in a tiny bar. All bass oriented music at various bpms. There are like 11 of us, so we have the ability to vary it up pretty easy, but we also have our out of state friends come play too. Mizeyesis & Elijah Divine were a definite favorite of mine personally.

9.) RAMEN OR MAC AND CHEESE?

Ramen. Will Ferrell method. Google it.

10.) ANY BOOKS YOU READING RIGHT NOW?

Yeah. Denial of Death by Ernest Becker. Excellent read so far.  http://www.ernest-becker.com/thedenialofdeath/

click the book above to go to Amazon and buy it

Also reading a book about Pineland, which was a mental institution in Maine that was at the center of eugenics and sterilization reform of people. http://usm.maine.edu/publicaffairs/usm-education-professor-publishes-new-history-pineland-and-maines-eugenics-movement http://www.uvm.edu/~lkaelber/eugenics/ME/ME.html

Need to finish Perfume by Patrick Süskind too.

11.) IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE RIGHT NOW WITH $5000 Where would it be and What would you be doing?

Definitely overseas. Never been outside the country yet. I think it would be most dependant on going to a place where I had a friend living, that could be a tour guide and give me a real idea of what it’s like to live there. No tourist blinders.

12.) WHAT IS YOUR TOP 5 FAVORITE CHARITABLE CAUSES?

Bill Hicks Foundation for Wildlife Rehabilitation is the only one that comes to mind.

click the banner below to go to Bill Hicks Website:

http://www.billhicks.org/

13.) WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU RIGHT NOW?

My fiancee and two kids. Getting married in late September. I am incredibly fortunate to have what I have in my life in regards to this. I had to bust my ass to get things where they are now, and I don’t take my situation for granted. Not for one day.

14.) ANYONE LOCKED DOWN YOU WANT TO SHOUT OUT IN THE BING?

Not right now haha.

15.) DO YOU HAVE A SOUNDCLOUD FACEBOOK WEBSITE MIXCLOUD TWITTER YOUTUBE OR OTHER PROFILES ONLINE YOU’LD LIKE TO SHARE?

Migrating everything to http://undrig.blogspot.com/ currently. Check out my place on the net and here’s my Soundcloud pages:

16.) WHO’S IN YOUR TOP TEN RIGHT NOW?

Definitely could never really have a solid top ten. I kinda switch gears pretty quick im terms of what I like to listen to, and never really think of how it ranks against other stuff I am also enjoying. I tend to gravitate toward music I can’t put a finger on that I know no names for.

17.) WHAT KIND OF PERFORMER ARE YOU?

A shy one haha. Even though I am gregarious socially with friends, I really try not to center any attention on myself. I just like to play music I love on good soundsystems for my friends. I try not to overcomplicate it beyond that.

18.) DO YOU LIKE ART?

Sure yea. The Dada movement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada http://www.dadart.com/dadaism/dada/020-history-dada-movement.html has a pretty big influence in much of what I do and seek out. Also into performance art like Ron Athey http://ronatheynews.blogspot.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Athey. Kinda outside the box type stuff. Though I am far too shy to bare my soul in the ways I admire in others. Maybe that’s why I admire the brave aspect of it.

19.) IF SO ANY VISUAL ARTISTS OR PAINTERS OR GRAFFITI ARTISTS OR GRAPHIC DESIGNERS ETC ETC YOUR INTO RIGHT NOW?

Gotta give a shout out to my buddy Bill Grifith. Met him at the first party he ever went to. His mind was officially blown and he never looked back. Got into doing visuals and has always had a level of quality with his work where his taste is symboitic with his knowledge of really sick technology he’s working with. My friend Justin Lee Brown also makes amazing artwork. I was fortunate enough to get a few originals from her. Which I framed and hang above my rig in the studio. You can FB stalk her at.

21.) WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO GET DAILY NEWS FROM ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS IN OUR COUNTRY AND ABROAD?

We have a paper but I never read it. I kinda avoid the news LOL!

22.) Where do you see the future of Electronic Music heading?

It would be silly to pretend there hasn’t been this huge surge of people getting into electronic dance music lately. Granted I can’t help but wonder if many of these same people would have been at a Limp Bizkit concert 15 years ago if the timing was different. While everything seems to balance itself out, when you hear Dubstep on a discovery channel commercial, you can’t help but wonder if something akin to a disco backlash is lying in wait. I don’t think any of that would affect the lives of people who don’t wait for a music journalist to coin a term, before they can feel comfortable with something. Although some people complain that the over-saturation of creative mediums thru the internet sacrifices quality over quantity, you can still find amazing things if you care to look hard enough. If you find something you like, look up an interview with the person who made it and find out what inspired them. You’ll retrace their trajectory backwards and find amazing things. The internet is designed from the ground up for people who are never content and always searching out new things to assimilate and take in. Yet with all this information at our fingertips than ever. It seems like a lot of kids are content to take the first thing somebody puts on their plate without digging much deeper. Cheers to the ones who do take the plunge though!

23.) If you could work with ANY artist, who would it be?

Amon Tobin http://www.amontobin.com/ I would love to just be a fly on the wall, let alone collab. Objekt and Boards of Canada http://www.boardsofcanada.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boards_of_Canada would be right behind him.

http://keinobjekt.tumblr.com/

https://www.facebook.com/keinobjekt

24.) What country’s do you like best for your genre besides your own?

Since I have never left this country, I feel my answer might be uninformed. It appears something awesome is definitely in selected water supplies of places like Bristol & Estonia though!

25.) What’s your favorite sport?

Football! Steeler football!

http://www.steelers.com/

26.) When did you first start DJ’ing?

Started making tunes and spinning in early 1999.

27.) Is there a reason or someone/something that influenced you to take the step towards becoming who you are today in the music industry?

Side rooms playing jungle were a huge influence on me when I was younger. There would be some massive thing goin on in the main room. You’d step into this side room playing jungle and it would be like stepping into another world. That really hit home for me. I had only really been into the more experimental older industrial stuff for electronic music up to that point. Jungle was the first music being played in clubs that opened my eyes. I think everybody doing this stuff is trying to recreate that same magic for other people. For some people it might be one dj, for most people it’s an overall experience they have, That feeling we’re all chasing, that we are always wishing we could bottle up and keep on a shelf forever.

28.) Top 5 events you’ve played since starting to DJ?

Beltek 2012 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beltek-Festival/136467499731059 http://www.beltekfestival.com/ was my first proper Beltek since I had moved back from the west coast. Probably would had been just as special even if I had not played to be honest. Beltek crew are great people.

Music Ecology https://www.facebook.com/MusicEcology http://musicecologyboston.com/ in Boston, I just played this recently. Ever since I moved back, it was my goal to infiltrate a proper bass music oriented night in a city like Boston, where nobody knew me and smack people upside the head with something even the most open minded people can’t put their finger on. There was a last minute addition to the lineup of Pandai’a and Incyde, who were visiting from Hawaii, so it was very humbling to be sharing the bill with Dubwar alumni. Great people involved with Music Ecology.

The Event Kahbang http://www.kahbang.com/ https://www.facebook.com/kahbang was a fun learning experience for me. First time ever playing silent disco. Also got to Meet Dara and look at old lady porn with him. You’ll have to ask me in person about the details of this one haha.

Synthesis 2, There was an earthquake later that night and I was taking the blame from a few. I played a really nice timeslot outdoors and got the whole party shutdown. I think that Mystic by Kingdom was the tune that put the nail in the coffin for the cops.

Heavy Pressure Dec of 2011, http://heavypressure.com/?cat=8 http://heavypressure.com/ Something was in the air that night. Everything just went completely off. That one will always stand out of all the times I held residency with Moldy http://selectormoldy.com/ and crew.

I rep The Mikst Nutz Fam. Big Oh!, Johnny Hatch (He’s still in here!), Kon, and Budaroc/Grandscale. And I rep with Reel Drama as well.

5.) WHATS YOUR FIRST MEMORIES OF MUSIC?

My first memories of music is my pops playing Parliament and Bootsy stuff like that in the crib.

6.) WHEN DID YOU FIRST HEAR HIP-HOP MUSIC?

I first heard rap music played in Derby Park across from the projects where I lived at the time. Back in like 81 or 82 hearing cats rhyme from my window.

7.) WHERE YOU AT RIGHT NOW? WHAT CURRENT AND RELEASED PROJECTS COULD YOU SHARE WITH US?

Me and Drama got “The Authenticity”, which we released in 2010 on Itunes, we still got “Pioneer” which we put out last year, for free download. And right now we’re working on “Regime Change”.

11.) IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE RIGHT NOW WITH 5000$ where would it be and what would you be doing?

If I had 5G’s I’d invest that in me and Dramas music, I wouldnt go anywhere. That would go back into the music.

I wouldn’t be able to say what kind of performer I am but, I like to get the crowd into it. I need the crowds energy…I have to know they’re into it or I’ll stop the music and let ’em know what it is. The crowd has to be a part of it.

18.) DO YOU LIKE ART?

22.) where do you see the future of (genre) heading?

I see Hip Hop Culture destroyed at the current rate it’s going. Redundant, repetitive chants paraded as hooks, with no skills in the rhymes, and robotic mechanical tracks with no melody. And gimmics, with the emasculation of men with the tight jeans, pink hoodies and man purses. It’s going to a bad place man.

23.) if you could work with any artist, who would it be?

I would want to raise J Dilla from the dead and work with him in the studio, with Monch. That would be dope.

24.) what country’s do you like best for your genre besides your own?

I can’t say I like a country for any genre but i love the fact that Japan respects HipHop Culture.

25.) what’s your favorite sport?
